Police in Ghana on Tuesday arrested a critic of the country’s President Akufo Addo for reportedly calling him a “drug addict”.

Frank Kwaku Appiah who is a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) party is reported by local media Starr FM to have been arrested after making the comments in the media.

President Akufo Addo before winning the 2016 presidential elections had to fight off several allegations from his political opponents who claim he is arrogant and uses drugs.

Supporters of the opposition party have made other disparaging comments about him during radio discussions in the led up to the 2016 general elections.

Kwaku Appiah was forced to apologize for his latest comment but the police still went ahead to arrest him for interrogation.

The General Secretary of the NDC Asiedu Nketia told local media Adom FM that “Akufo-Addo (the president) has not cleared himself after Wikileaks said he smokes wee so I believe it.”

“The NPP repealed the Criminal Libel Law so everyone is at liberty to speak his mind and make any allegation against anyone so Appiah Stadium has not done anything wrong to warrant an invitation from the National Security,” Asiedu Nketia added.

Some critics of the President consider the latest arrest as an attempt to suppress freedom of speech.
