Film producers in Ghana on Thursday staged a street protest over what they call the influx of Telenovelas in the West African nation as television stations switch to these foreign movies manly from Latin America.
The film producers said the government must ensure that TV stations stop showing foreign content as they argue that the practice is destroying their business.
One of the protesters Atta Aboagye is quoted by Starr FM to have said that those protesting “want government to pass the broadcasting bill and when those bills are passed, there will be 70% for local content and 30% foreign.”
“This will control the influx of these telenovelas. We know that this government is a listening government and will hear us”, Aboagye said about the bill.
Many African countries continue to battle the influx of telenovelas and their popularity with viewers. These films imported from Latin America are then dubbed into local languages to relate to local viewers.
