The President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe has given a signal of naming his successor very soon as pressure mounts on him to outline a succession plan.
The 93-year old leader on Saturday told his supporters in Harare that whoever he names to succeed him would have to fight it out with other contenders within his party, the Zanu-PF.
Mugabe said “I can have my own candidate but that person must fight it out with other candidates at the congress,”
Mr. Mugabe’s wife, Grace and vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa have been engaged in a struggle over Mugabe’s successor for some time now.
“The constitution says the leader is chosen at the congress.” Mugabe said adding that “We have never done it before that… I will leave or give power to Mrs Mugabe, or Emmerson or Mphoko as my successor,”
Phelekezela Mphoko, his former vice-president is also seen as a contender.
“I follow the regulations very strictly. I cannot leave my wife in power like they do in some French (speaking) countries. We do not do that in Zanu-PF, we have a good history,” the longtime leader of Zimbabwe said.
Mugabe, led his southern African country to independence in 1980 from British colonial rule and has since been president of the country. His party selected him as its presidential candidate for the next general election.
