Key personnel have been appointed by Kenya’s election commission to manage the October 17 presidential re-run poll.

The election commission said on Tuesday in a statement that new staff will be in charge of the election following a Supreme court order last week for fresh elections after nullifying the August 8 result which saw incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta winning.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairman Wafula Chebukati said “The appointment takes immediate effect.”

The new officials will take charge of the information technology, logistics, operations and training as well as the national tallying centre during the re-run.

Opposition leader, Raila Odinga had raised concerns about the upcoming election re-run stating that his coalition was not ready to participate until they receive guarantees that things will be done differently.

He also wanted new officials to be appointed before the election and flawed the election commission for not consulting him before setting a new date for the election.

“You cannot do a mistake twice and expect to get different results,” Odinga told reporters. “A number of the officials of the commission should be sent home, some of them should be investigated for the heinous crimes they committed.” Odinga said

Kenya’s President Kenyatta responded to Odinga’s demands saying that law does not require the electoral body to consult Mr. Odinga.
