Kenya’s president Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday said he disagreed with a Supreme Court ruling that nullified August 8 presidential election victory.
He however said he would respect the decision and urged Kenyans to do the same. In speech shortly after the court ruling Mr. Kenyatta said “The court has made its decision. We respect it. We don’t agree with it. And again, I say peace … peace, peace, peace,” he said in a televised address. “That is the nature of democracy”.
The court ruled that the polls were not conducted in according with the country’s Constitution and Elections Act.
The Chief Justice David Maraga in his ruling said “Elections is not an event but an process. After considering the totality of the entire evidence, we are satisfied that the elections were not conducted in accordance to the dictates of the Constitution and the applicable principles,”
Maraga therefore said that “President Uhuru Kenyatta was not validly elected on August 8.”.
The top court has asked the electoral commission of Kenya, to conduct a fresh presidential election within 60 days, sparking jubilation among supporters of Raila Odinga who is the opposition leader.
There were agitations from lawyers who represented President Kenyatta and the electoral commission as they sought explanations and clarifications from the judges on the judgment.
The decision of the court excites the National Super Alliance (Nasa) whose leader Raila Odinga and running mate Kalonzo Musyoka, accused the IEBC of rigging the election in favour of Mr Kenyatta.
