Many HIV/AIDS patients that subjected themselves to treatment by former President of The Gambia, Yahya Jammeh died, according to surviving patients.
Those among the first batch to go for the treatment program by the former President in 2007 confessed that the said treatment was “not effective”.
These revelations were made by the patients to the technical committee on the proposed Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) which is on a nationwide consultative and sensitisation tour.
The meeting with the AIDs patients took place on Monday in Gambia’s Serekunda West area.
The Point in Gambia reported that Lamin Ceesay, a HIV patient, said in 2007 when “the former president said that he could cure AIDS, I was among those selected to undergo the treatment,” he said.
Lamin and his wife both HIV positive were enrolled in Jammeh’s treatment programme.
“The treatment was fake; my wife died in the process of the treatment because the medicine they were giving us was not for the human system. The medicines even caused us to be infected with other diseases,” Lamin said.
Jainaba Samateh, another HIV patient is reported to have said that “The Gambian people should know that the treatment was not effective and has cost so many lives”.
Mr. Jammeh had said publicly that he had cure for AIDS and has cured many of the disease. Yahya Jammeh usually prays while administering his alleged herbal HIV cure to patients.
Yahya Jammeh is currently in exile in Equatorial Guinea after losing the 2016 presidential elections to current president of Gambia, Adama Barrow.
