The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has announced it will be sending a delegation to the Democratic Republic of Congo which has witnessed heightened tension.
The SADC however is yet to finalize on the special envoy it intends sending to the DRC.
President Jacob Zuma, who has begun his tenure as chairperson of the SADC said at the end of the community’s summit in South Africa on Sunday urged Independent National Electoral Commission in DRC to make public the revised electoral calendar.
There were protests by DRC citizens living in South Africa outside the Department of International Relations headquarters where the summit was held.
News24 reported that the protesters demanded that the DRC withdraw from SADC.
The latest moves by the SADC is seen as a reaction to these agitations.
President Joseph Kabila did not attend the summit, his Prime Minister Bruno Tshibila, attended on his behalf.
39 million voters have been registered so far for planned elections. The opposition in DRC is demanding that elections be held this year.
Mr. Zuma said the SADC summit “noted that this might not be possible to hold elections in December 2017, due to a number of challenges currently receiving attention”.
