Libyan officials on Thursday said that 135 Nigerian migrants have been repatriated to their country after failing to cross the Mediterranean to Europe.
An official told the AFP that those repatriated included women and children.
Hosni Abu Ayanah of the Libyan government agency said “We are organising… the voluntary repatriation of 135 clandestine Nigerian migrants who were rescued offshore by the coastguard.”
Abu Ayanah’s group is helping to tackle illegal migration.

According to the AFP, the Libyan authorities have been engaging the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to repatriate migrants, many of whom are from sub-Saharan Africa.
Many migrants get trapped in Libya where they are detained in prisons and molested in some cases. Some are even killed or trafficked.

Hundreds of migrants who failed to cross the Mediterranean have had to be repatriated in the past months to their countries with the support of the IOM.
