Officials in South Africa on Thursday announced that the police are on alert to prevent Zimbabwe’s first lady, Grace Mugabe from leaving the country after she was charged with assaulting a 20 year old model.
Police Minister Fikile Mbalula said “We, in terms of South African police, [have] already put tabs on the borders in relation to her leaving the country, so there is no question about that.
“So tabs have been put, a red alert has been put, so she is not somebody who has been running away.” Mbalula said.
Grace Mugabe is accused of beating the South African model at a hotel in Johannesburg with an extension cord.
Although police had expected Mrs Mugabe, 52, to turn herself in on Tuesday, she failed to show up.
Her husband Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe on Thursday arrived in South Africa for a southern African heads of state meeting due to start on Friday.
There were claims earlier that Mrs. Mugabe has left the shores of South Africa but she is believed to still be in the country.
South Africa’s police ministry had said Zimbabwe’s government on Wednesday sought diplomatic immunity for Mrs Mugabe.
On Thursday family of the victim had claimed that Mrs. Mugabe wanted to pay them to drop the assault charges. The family has turned down the request and want justice to be served.
