South Africa’s police ministry on Wednesday confirmed that the government of Zimbabwe has sought diplomatic immunity for the country’s first lady, Grace Mugabe.
Mrs. Mugabe has been accused of assaulting a 20-year old South African model in a hotel in Johannesburg on Sunday.

The model, Gabriella Engels lodged a complaint with the police who subsequently charged the wife of President Robert Mugabe. She was due to appear in court on Tuesday but failed to do so.
Zimbabwe’s government is now reported to have invoked “diplomatic immunity cover” for her, according to a statement from the police ministry in South Africa.
Despite this immunity request, authorities in South Africa have insisted on having Mrs. Mugabe appearing in court saying it wants to ensure that the 52-year old first lady was “processed through the legal system”.
South Africa’s acting police chief Lesetja Mothiba has told a parliamentary committee that Mrs Mugabe “must go to court”.
Zimbabwe’s main opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), has called Mrs. Mugabe a “total disgrace and a complete national embarrassment”.
In a statement it said Mrs. Mugabe “has to be brought to order and indeed she has to appreciate that she is not a law unto herself.”
