Officials in Nigeria have confirmed the death of at least 27 people after 3 suicide bombers carried out an attack in north-eastern part of the country on Tuesday.
Several others were also reported to have sustained injuries in the attack.
The female suicide bombers blew themselves up outside a refugee camp near Maiduguri in Borno state which is a stronghold of the militant group Boko Haram.
AFP reported that there was panic in the refugee camp when the first bomber blew herself up.
An eyewitness was quoted by the AFP as saying “People were trying to close their shops when two other female bombers triggered their explosives, causing most of the casualties.”
The Secretary General of the United Nation, António Guterres has condemned the attack.
In a statement he asked for “those responsible for these repeated heinous acts in Nigeria and neighbouring countries to be swiftly brought to justice”.
António Guterres stressed “the United Nations solidarity and support to the Government of Nigeria in its fight against terrorism and violent extremism.”
A recent report from the US anti-terrorist researchers showed that Boko Haram is using more women suicide bombers than men.
The Nigerian government appears to be struggling to contain the activities of the militant group with several attacks happening in recent months claiming many lives.
