Officials in Ghana have announced an end to ongoing efforts to rescue persons who are trapped in a collapsed mine operated by illegal small scale miners.
There are indications all those trapped in the collapsed pit in Prestea, in western Ghana could not survive.
The disaster which occurred on Sunday claimed more than 17 lives with officials able to retrieve only six of those bodies.
Ghana’s deputy lands and mines Minister Benito Owusu Bio told local media Starr FM that “officially rescue efforts have ended.” He said it is impossible to retrieve bodies that are still trapped in the collapsed pit.
Relations of some of the victims of the disaster have appealed to the government to end the search for their loved ones and close the pit.
A funeral ceremony will now be held for those who died in the disaster.
Illegal mining on a small scale has been a major issue in Ghana with the government rolling out several measures to end the menace.
