The President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma was forced to abandon his speech at a May day rally in Bloemfontein after scuffles broke-out between his supporters and some members of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) on Monday.
Mr. Zuma was booed by some of those who had gathered at the rally chanting “Zuma must go”. Cosatu has called on the president to step down amid political crisis and controversy over Mr. Zuma’s presidency.
Eyewitness News in South Africa reported that Mr. Zuma was expected to address the gathering, despite at least three Cosatu affiliates protesting the decision to have him speak to them.
Cosatu President Sdumo Dlamini and African National Congress (ANC) NEC member Naledi Pandor were also booed at the event.
President Zuma was heckled and booed by Cosatu members.when he arrived at the rally ground amid chaos.
