Soldiers from the ECOWAS mission in the Gambia and the Gambian military are reported to have exchanged gunshots among themselves in Kanilai.
According to the BBC Afrique, the soldiers had gone to Kanilai, the birthplace of Mr. Jammeh who was ousted this year after losing last year’s elections to current President, Adama Barrow.
Mr. Jammeh is in exile in Equatorial Guinea after ruling the Gambia for more than two decades.
The Ecowas soldiers had gone to Jammeh’s hometown to search his house for weapons allegedly being hidden there.
BBC Afrique also reported that two former Jammeh fighters sustained injuries.
Gambian soldiers on duty at Kanilai on April 4 prevented another set of soldiers from the Yundum military camp from coming to the area.
The ECOWAS troops are still in The Gambia following a request from President Adama Barrow who has been rolling out series of reforms since becoming president.
