Sudan’s army on Wednesday confirmed that five of its soldiers have been killed while fighting for the Saudi Arabia-led coalition against Houthi forces in Yemen.
Reuters quoted a spokesman for Sudan’s armed forces, Brigadier General Ahmed Khalifa al-Shami as saying “We lost five martyrs and 22 others have been wounded… we inflicted huge losses on the enemy and are holding many prisoners of war.”
Sudan in 2015 sent hundreds of its soldiers to Yemen to support Gulf Arab troops fighting Iran-allied Houthis.
The armed Houthi group has been fighting against the government of Yemen’s President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi for the past two years.
The Yemen government is backed by Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates along with Egypt, Jordan and Morocco.
Thousands of people have been killed in the conflict leaving many in dire need of humanitarian support.
