The United Nation is pushing for fresh talks regarding Western Sahara and its quest to gain independence from Morocco.
The U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres according to an official report submitted to the Security Council on Monday want the negotiations over the dispute to get the input of Morocco and the movement seeking the independence of Western Sahara.
Morocco has always disputed the Independence claim by Western Sahara as it announced that the territory is part of its kingdom.
The Polisario movement has also said that the territory in contention belongs to the Sahrawi people who fought a guerrilla war until a 1991 U.N.-backed ceasefire.
U.N. has not been able to settle the dispute despite several attempts for years. In the UN document, Antonio Guterres said “I intend to propose that the negotiating process be relaunched with a new dynamic and a new spirit.”
“For progress to be made, the negotiations must be open to both parties’ proposals and ideas. Algeria and Mauritania, as neighbouring countries, can and should make important contributions to this process,” he added.
