The president of Benin Patrice Talon has said that he was saddened by his failure to secure amendment to his country’s constitution to reduce the presidential term.
Benin’s parliament rejected a draft bill Patrice Talon’s government put forward to reduce the presidential term limit from two to one.
The bill needed 63 votes to pass but only 60 MPs voted for it while 22 voted against it.
Despite not happy with his failure to get the needed support, Talon said that will be the end of his push for a reduction in presidential term.
He told journalists on Saturday that “The revision of the constitution is finished. The single mandate is over.”
The president of Benin will not push further after saying that having a two five-year term as a president makes one complacent. He wanted the term to be reduced to one six-year term.
Patrice Talon was hoping for the passage of the bill in order for a referendum to be held on the issues. Experts consider this a major blow for him after promising to reduce the term limit last year.
