The president of South Africa Jacob Zuma has made changes to his cabinet by replacing his finance minister Pravin Gordhan.
There have been oppositions to Mr. Zuma’s decision to sack Mr. Gordhan from within his African National Congress (ANC) party, after recalling him from a roadshow event abroad this week.
There are speculations Mr. Zuma suspected Gordhan to be meeting persons abroad to plot to overthrow him.
A statement from the president’s office on Thursday said President Zuma has replaced Gorghan with Malusi Gigaba. He has also appointed Sfiso Buthelezi as Deputy Finance Minister replacing Mcebisi Jonas.
The new finance minister, Malusi Gigaba previously held the post of Home Affairs Minister. Mr. also made changes to energy, police, tourism and others portfolios bring in new faces into his government.
Reuters reported that Mr. Zuma at a meeting with ANC’s top officials on Thursday evening said “I have directed the new ministers and deputy ministers to work tirelessly with their colleagues to bring about radical socioeconomic transformation and to ensure that the promise of a better life for the poor and the working class becomes a reality.”
There are moves by the main opposition to call for another vote of no-confidence in Zuma over the decision to sack Gordhan
