The Nigerian army has launched a manhunt for Abubakar Shekau, the leader of the militant group, Boko Haram.
The defence minister, Mansur Dan Ali has said that the military has raided territories controlled by Boko Haram in recent months.
This is surprising for some analysts since the Nigerian army leadership has on several occasions claimed to have killed the said Boko Haram leader.
Such announcements have however been denied by Abubakar Shekau in video recordings.
Dan Ali told reporters in Abuja that “He is on the run so he may be hiding in one of the enclaves of Sambisa forest,”
“We shall be patrolling and ransacking that forest for the whereabouts of Shekau. We will not relax, we are on him,” he said.
Parts of Nigeria continue to suffer attacks from Boko Haram. More than 15,000 people have been killed by the group. Millions have been displaced.
