The long-serving President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Issa Hayatou has been defeated by Ahmad Ahmad of Madagascar in CAF elections held in Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa.
Ahmad who is the president of the Madagascar Football Association, polled 34 votes, against Issa Hayatou’s 20 votes.
It brings to an end Mr. Hayatou’s 29-year reign as boss of Africa’s football governing body.
Ahmad had support from the Council of Southern African Football Associations (Cosafa) and other Federations before the elections.
Issa Hayatou was seeking re-election for an eighth term. In 2013 Mr. Hayatou was re-elected unopposed.
Hayatou had said this term would be his last term had he won.
