Nigeria’s police chief has painted a gloomy picture of the severity of rape in the country after meeting President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday.
According to Mohammed Adamu the country between January and May this year recorded 717 rapes.
The trend of the rapes amounts to one rape every five hours, something that worries Mohammed Adamu.
He told journalists in Abuja that rape is a serious and wicked offence that needs to be tackled with all seriousness.
He said so far 799 suspects had been arrested and 631 had appeared in court, as he urges people to reports cases for action.
Following a surge in cases of rape and violence against women and children, Nigerian governors last week declared a state of emergency.
There have been concerns over how rape and violence against women and children had increased during recent lockdown to contain the spread of coronavirus.
Series of protests have taken place in Nigeria as people call for justice for rape victims.
Thousands of Nigerians have already signed a petition demanding an action from the government to end the increasing cases of rape.
Many of the rape cases are not reported due to stigmatization and lack of confidence in the judicial process.
The Nigerian police chief assured that security agencies are working together with civil society organizations prosecute perpetrators of rape and help victims rebuild their lives.
