At least 60 people including soldiers have been reportedly killed by gunmen in the Nigerian Borno state.
The attacks have also left hundreds of people injured. It’s unclear who carried out the deadly attacks but it comes just days after gunmen killed over 80 people in another village.
Two humanitarian workers and three residents have told Reuters that armed fighters with heavy weaponry including rocket launchers arrived in Monguno, a hub for international non-governmental organisations, at roughly 11am local time (10:00 GMT) on Saturday.
The fighters then overran government forces and killed at least 20 soldiers.
Hospitals in the area are overwhelmed with the hundreds of injured civilians who have reported for treatment.
Some of the injured have been forced to lay outside the facility for treatment.
The fighters have burnt down the United Nations’ humanitarian hub in the area and a local police station.
The residents say the fighters also distributed letters in the local Hausa language, warning them not to work with the military or international aid groups.
The Nigerian Military and the United Nations are yet to comment on the latest deadly attack.
