Ghana’s President, Nana Akufo Addo has told his country’s citizens that their survival against the Coronavirus is in their own hands.
On Sunday evening the President cautioned citizens not to relax in observing all the health protocols required to avoid catching the virus.
In his televised address the president said the virus cannot stop the country from operating in a normal way and that citizens would have to adapt to the virus.
But the President was concerned people may ignore health protocols, which could put their health at risk.
Nana Akufo Addo said that “our survival is in our own hands”, referring to the citizens while urging them to remain safe from catching the virus.
He mentioned that wearing of facemasks in public is now compulsory with the police given an executive order to enforce it.
Ghana has so far recorded almost 12,000 cases of coronavirus and is one of the countries in Africa with huge infections.
Critics of the government have said the high cases call for tighter measures to contain the spread of the virus.
But the President said the high confirmed cases of the virus among the population should not be a cause for worry.
He said over 200,000 tests have been conducted and such an initiative is the surest way to isolate those with the virus and treat them.
The country has also relaxed most of its restrictions meant to control the spread of the virus.
Places of worship have reopened and schools are also reopening this week for students to resume studies.
