Police in the Nigeria have arrested a suspected rapist following wave of sexual assault on women in some communities.
The suspected is reported to have carried out at least 40 instances of rape in one town in the Kano state.
His victims reportedly include a 10 year old girl and an 80 year old woman.
There has been a recent wave of rape and killing of women in Nigeria, which have led to a national outcry.
Thousands of Nigerians have signed a petition demanding an action from the Nigerian government to end the increasing cases of rape.
Police spokesperson Abdullahi Haruna said the suspect was arrested in the Kano town of Kwanar Dangora.
He was caught by a mother in the bedroom of her children. Although he managed to escape, he was arrested by neighbors who gave him a hot chase.
The chief of the town, Ahmadu Yau has hailed the arrest of the suspected rapist.
“People of Dangora are so happy at this time and we hope justice will be served appropriately,” he said.
Residents of the town have also heaved a sigh of relief over the arrest.
A survey published by NOIPolls in July 2019 revealed that up to one in every three girls living in Nigeria could have experienced at least one form of sexual assault by the time they reach 25.
Many of the rape cases are not reported due to stigmatization and lack of confidence in the judicial process.
