The President of Tanzania John Magufuli has declared his country “coronavirus-free” saying the success was due to prayers by citizens.

He told worshippers in a church in the capital, Dodoma that “The corona disease has been eliminated thanks to God.”

Magufuli has been under criticisms for how his government has handled the entire pandemic in Tanzania.

The World Health Organization (WHO) expressed concern over the government’s strategy after it stopped publishing data the virus.

The last official data from Tanzania was on April 29 which saw the country recording 509 cases, with 21 deaths.

There is no evidence Tanzania isn’t recording new cases since April 29 with the US embassy in the country saying health facilities were overwhelmed by cases.

President Magufuli has dismissed the US embassy’s warning and insisted that the crisis had been exaggerated.

He said in the church on Sunday that “I want to thank Tanzanians of all faiths. We have been praying and fasting for God to save us from the pandemic that has afflicted our country and the world. But God has answered us.

“I believe, and I’m certain that many Tanzanians believe, that the corona disease has been eliminated by God,” he told worshippers.

Last month John Magufuli also revealed that his own child contracted Coronavirus but has now recovered and doing well.

President Magufuli said his child who has recovered is now “doing push-ups”.

According to him the child made a recovery by adopting regimen of self-isolation, steam inhalation, and lemon and ginger juice.

But the acclaimed recovery regiment is yet to be confirmed as effective for the treatment of covid-19.
