New Zealand has lifted all of its coronavirus restrictions with the country reporting no active cases. It has now moved to what it calls level one.
Moving to level one, the lowest of its four-tier alert system means there would be no need for social distancing.
There will also be no limits on public gatherings although borders will remain closed, according to the government.
Under the new rules, all schools and workplaces will also open. Weddings, funerals and public transport will be able to resume without any restrictions.
For more than two weeks now New Zealand has reported no new Covid-19 cases, prompting the latest review to its covid-19 restrictions.
New Zealand recorded 1,154 confirmed cases and 22 deaths from Covid-19 since the virus was detected late February.
It was widely praised for its handling of the crisis after going into a lockdown on 25 March.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told journalists “While we’re in a safer, stronger position there’s still no easy path back to pre-Covid life, but the determination and focus we have had on our health response will now be vested in our economic rebuild.”
“While the job is not done, there is no denying this is a milestone. So can I finish with a very simple, ‘Thank you, New Zealand,” she said.
