The Education Minister of Madagascar Rijasoa Andriamanana has been fired over plans to buy $ 2 million worth of sweets for students.
Last week Rijasoa Andriamanana announced that she was ordering the sweets for children to take to mask the “bitter” aftertaste of the Covid-Organics concoction.
The AFP news agency reported that each student was supposed to be given three sweets.
But the plan was aborted based on objections from President Andry Rajoelina.
In a statement the Madagascan government said the Minister for Higher Education Elia Béatrice Assoumacou, would take over in an acting capacity.
Meanwhile nearly 1,000 cases of coronavirus have been reported in the country, with seven virus-related deaths.
Citizens this week protested over lockdown measures resulting in clashes between them and soldiers deployed to the eastern town of Toamasina.
The violent protest was triggered after a street vendor was allegedly beaten by security forces.
Madagascar is also promoting Covid-Organics, a plant-based tonic as a cure for Covid-19.
The WHO however said it has recommended “self-medication with any medicines as a prevention or cure for Covid-19”.
