Zambian sex workers are reported to be playing useful roles in tracing persons who have been infected with coronavirus.
The country’s health minister, Chitalu Chilufya said sex workers helped to locate 76 of 85 reported new cases in the northern town of Nakonde.
Chilufya said most of those cases were either sex workers or lorry drivers as infections continue to increase in the Southern African nation.
“Sex workers have been very co-operative and they are giving us all the leads we want,” Mr Chilufya said adding that “The situation in Nakonde remains grave, and the president is concerned.”
“We had a case where one of them appeared with symptoms and told us about a client who was a lorry driver of foreign jurisdiction and even gave us a contact number. We called that number and we were told the person we called had Covid-19,” the minister said.
Despite Zambia confirming 267 Covid-19 infections, with seven deaths the country has reopened restaurants, casinos and gyms.
Churches are also allowed to operate if leaders of those churches wish to and observe social distancing measures.
Zambia’s President Edgar Lungu on Sunday ordered the border with Tanzania to be “temporarily closed.”
“The Nakonde border will be temporarily closed. There shall be no traffic in and out of Nakonde,” Chitalu Chilufya told journalists.
