Soldiers in Ghana are reportedly flogging citizens who refuse to put on their facemasks while going to public places.

The action by the military officers is to enforce the directive on the wearing of facemasks by the government.

Ghana’s Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) have made the wearing of masks mandatory in compliance with an order from Ghana’s President Nana Akufo Addo.

A Ghanaian journalist based in Western Ghana Emmanuel Ohenegyan told Africa Feeds that some soldiers deployed to Takoradi and Kwesimintsim municipalities flogged some residents including foreigners who were not wearing the masks.

In the Greater Accra Region police also turned away people who did not wear masks in the Central Business District.

Some supermarkets, commercial centres and private businesses are also enforcing the no mask no entry policy.

Scores of people have also been arrested in the northern and other regions for deifying the COVID_19 restrictions.

Ghana’s Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman Manu has expressed frustration over the non-compliance to the stay at home advice.

“Some want to come out no matter what. If you come out and you have it you will give it to another person and if you don’t have it it is likely you will pick it from the streets and send it home. So why are we not staying at home?” he asked.

COVID-19 cases in the West African country continue to increase with current case count at 2,719 as of May 5.

The country was among the first in Africa to lift it lockdown and other restrictions to curb the spread of the virus.
