Ghana has announced plans to reopen its airports to domestic flights after closing it over three weeks ago due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Currently Ghana has shut its airports to domestic and international flights as it makes efforts to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

However the country’s main airport, the Kotoka International Airport still receives flights from overseas especially cargo under special arrangements.

Ghana’s aviation minister Joseph Kofi Adda told journalists on Tuesday that the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) will commence domestic operations by the weekend.

“We are here to disinfect the airport in all ways possible, the airspace, the walls, the counters and everything that will be touched by the operators or passengers and the other areas to be disinfected include the cargo section,” the minister said.

The airport is expected to make available hand washing machines, sanitisers, and border nose and face mask before operation resumes again.

Adda revealed that Ghana wants “to do it well and do it right by ensuring that we set the right example for others to follow.”

“For countries who have closed down their airport and about to start again is only Ghana which has achieve such feat so we are hoping after today, they will be mobbing up by the Airport Company Port Health and soon after by the weekend Ghana will start domestic flight”, he said.

Ghana is one of the first countries in Africa to lift its lockdown measures for major cities after lasting three weeks.

The country also has one of the highest cases of coronavirus in Africa with current case count at over 1,671.
