Libya’s former interim prime minister after the overthrow of former leader Muammar Gaddafi has died of coronavirus.
Mahmoud Jibril died in a private hospital in Egypt’s capital Cairo where he was undergoing treatment since contracting the virus in March.
Jibril in 2011 during the peak of the Libyan revolution abandoned Gaddafi to become Libya’s rebel prime minister.
He led the onslaught during the 2011 revolution that finally got Gaddafi out of power and his eventual death.
Jibril became interim leader of Libya until first elections were held in 2012 after a law was passed banning former Gaddafi officials from public office.
He moved to Egypt and lived there in recent years after losing power. Jibril was interim leader of Libya for just seven months.
Mr Jebril, 67 was head of the National Economic Development Board under Col Gaddafi’s regime.
Libya’s internationally recognised government in Tripoli has also confirmed 18 coronavirus cases in the country and one death.
The country is still shredded in conflict, which has killed thousands and displaced millions.
