An Italian health worker has strangled his doctor girlfriend to death after they argued over coronavirus.
The male nurse, Antonio De Pace had accused his girlfriend, Lorena Quaranta, 27 of giving him coronavirus.
De Pace told police officers that he unleashed the attack because the victim gave him Covid-19, prosecutors said.
State prosecutors said both had been working in Messina, Sicily, but were drafted in to help out with the coronavirus outbreak.
According to Police, paramedics were called in to the crime scene after finding De Pace on the floor of their apartment with his wrists cut.
Health workers who are friends to the victim at the hospital they worked saved De Pace’s life but he stunned police officer when he said “I killed her because she gave me coronavirus.”
But testing carried out on the victim and the suspect suggest that they did not have the virus.
De Pace had just weeks ago posted a tribute to his girlfriend following her qualification as a medic.
He wrote: ‘To reach our dreams you have to work hard with determination and you are proof.
‘I wish you to keep chasing your dreams, always live the life you always imagined. Well done! Congratulations on your brilliant graduation doctor.’
Lorena recently wrote on social media that “Now more than ever we need to demonstrate responsibility and love for life.
You must show respect for yourselves, your families and the country.
You must think and remember those that dedicate their lives daily to looking after our sick.
Let’s stick together everyone staying at home. Let’s avoid the next one falling sick is a loved one or ourselves.’
Italy’s total death toll from the coronavirus is now at at least 13,155, the Civil Protection Agency revealed with infections now a 110,574.
