Burkina Faso and Guinea have refused to take in their citizens who tested positive for coronavirus in Ghana.

On Monday Ghana announced plans to deport 8 Guinean nationals and 2 Burkinabes who have tested positive for COVID-19 in the city of Tamale, North of the country.

According to officials they arrived in Ghana before the country’s borders were closed to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

The government’s joint committee on health and security got them isolated after their presence in the country was revealed.

But Ghana said it is now facing a major challenge sending these West African citizens back to their home countries.

Ghana’s minister for the Northern Region, Salifu Saeed, told reporters on Wednesday that authorities in Guinea and Burkina Faso do not want to receive their citizens who have the virus.

“Our headache is that the Guinean authorities are saying they will not agree for us to return them,” the Minister said.

Burkina Faso officials have also threatened to return Ghanaians who are critically ill in that country and receiving treatment.

Ghana is now hoping to avoid a diplomatic row with the two West African nations.

195 confirmed cases of the Coronavirus have been reported in Ghana as at April 1, 2020

The country’s two major cities, Accra and Kumasi are now on a lockdown to prevent the spread of the virus.
