An eight-month-old baby in Uganda has tested positive for coronavirus, according to health officials.

The baby’s father recently travelled back from Kenya’s western city of Kisumu.

Ugandan officials say the baby girl is one of five new cases detected in Uganda.

Blood samples from her parents have been taken while health workers treat her at Iganga hospital east of the capital, Kampala.

The total number of cases in Uganda now stands at 14 with signals more drastic measures would be announced soon to stop the spread of the virus.

Two of the confirmed five cases are Chinese nationals who travelled from China recently.

“At 8pm tonight, I will deliver my fifth address to the country in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. Remember to follow guidelines given by the Ministry of Health and myself to stay safe and healthy,” Mr Museveni tweeted on Wednesday.

Africa has so far recorded over 2,000 cases of coronavirus across 43 countries with 64 deaths so far.
