Senegal and Ivory Coast have all imposed curfew restricting movements of their citizens in response to accelerating coronavirus outbreaks.
Both countries have recorded over 100 cases together with the virus fast spreading among the populace.
Senegal’s President Macky Sall said “If we continue to act as if it’s business as usual, the virus will spread even more massively and aggressively.”
President Sall has now ordered an 8 p.m. to 6 a.m curfew and banned public gatherings, closed public spaces and limited transport between different regions.
Ivory Coast, President Alassane Ouattara also announced a 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew.
He has also ordered the closure of all restaurants and banned “unauthorised” travel between cities.
Ouattara authorised “the progressive lockdown of populations by geographic area, depending on the progression of the pandemic”.
“In the fight that we are waging against the propagation of COVID-19, our principal enemy will be indiscipline and non-respect of preventive orders,” Ouattara said, referring to the respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus.
In West Africa countries like Mauritania and Burkina Faso have also announced curfews.
South Africa has also imposed a lockdown which will be enforced from Thursday in an attempt to stop the spread of the virus.
