Rwanda has announced new measures to deal with the outbreak of coronavirus after recording its first case on Saturday.

In a statement the government said places of worship are closed from Sunday March 15 with prayers to be said from homes.

Schools are also to be closed from Monday March 16 as well to ensure that there are no threats to citizens.

The government also wants employers to allow employees to work from home whenever possible.

Large gatherings such as weddings and funerals are also to be suspended in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

But businesses and restaurants are to continue to operate with customers made to keep distances from each other.

Rwanda become the latest country in East Africa to confirm a case of coronavirus, the first in that country on Saturday.

The country’s Ministry of Health revealed that the patient is an Indian citizen who arrived from Mumbai, India, on March 8.

The health ministry said the patient initially did not show any symptoms of the virus on arrival in Rwanda.

But he reported himself to a health facility on March 13 where he was immediately tested.

Rwanda’s President has also cautioned against fear and panic, as he urges citizens to maintain proper personal hygiene.
