Hundreds of Ghanaians on Tuesday marched through the streets of the capital Accra protesting plans by the country’s electoral commission to compile a new voters register for this year’s general elections.
Coordinated by a group called Ghana’s Inter-Party Resistance the protesters say a new voter’s register ahead of this year’s elections isn’t a good idea.
They want the electoral commission to drop the idea of a new register immediately.
The protesters held placards with inscriptions such as “Pay striking teachers, don’t waste money on needless register”, “No new register” among others.
Despite this agitation, the electoral commission has already stated that the compilation of the new register will start on April 18, 2020.
The commission said a new voters’ register will save the country $30 million if it compiles a new register.
Officials of the commission said the country will benefit more from a new register in terms of cost as well as well as enhanced features.
Efforts to bring all political parties together to agree on the need for the new register has however failed after several meetings.
Ghana will hold general elections in December this year and the stakes appear to be very high even at this time of the year.
