A 15-year-old Junior High School (JHS) graduate has committed suicide by hanging at a town called Agona Asafo in Central Ghana.

According to Ghana’s News Agency, the teenager hanged himself for not securing his preferred senior high school.

Isaac Arhin, according to reports had wished to be placed in a school in central Ghana under the country’s computer selection School Placement System (CSSPS).

He was however placed in a school in a town called Kwahu Tafo in the Eastern Ghana.

When his family expressed concerns in financing his trip to his new school in eastern Ghana as well as purchase a few items he needed, Arhin got frustrated.

A sister of the deceased, Georgina Boabeng, although Ghana is implementing a free education policy at the senior high school level, the family still needed to buy some items before they could send him.

Out of frustration the teenager complained to his siblings that his parents were not willing to send him to senior high school.

The teenager was later found in his room to have hanged himself. Police say they are now investigating the incident.

Ghana is implementing a free secondary education policy which means successful applicants who get placed in schools don’t pay fees.

The policy was meant to widen access to secondary education and remove cost barriers. Over 500,000 children are beneficiaries across Ghana so far.

But often parents have to sponsor their wards with some items especially those who have to go into boarding houses.
