British-Nigerian born boxer Anthony Joshua has revealed that his uncle predicted that he would lose to Andy Ruiz Jr who he described as an “upset king” five years ago.
Andy Ruiz Jr. dethroned Joshua with a stunning seventh-round stoppage at New York’s Madison Square Garden in June.
That made Ruiz the first Mexican-American world heavyweight champion.
Joshua, previously undefeated was fighting for the first time in the United States. He was defending his IBF, WBA and WBO titles but was knocked down four times in the fight.
The referee then waved off the contest in the seventh. But Joshua has vowed to bounce back.
Anthony Joshua in a documentary on his YouTube channel said: “I remember years ago my uncle wrote out a list of all the heavyweights and next to Andy Ruiz Jr he wrote ‘upset king’ believe it or not.
“This was around 2014 he gave me that list.”
He said about the fight that “I couldn’t even really remember where I was at the time but I just knew that I was in for a fight.”
Joshua adds that “I knew that I should be here [on the canvas], so I just got to my feet and we went again. “Ruiz done well, hit me with a good shot and I just couldn’t recover from it and that was it.”
Anthony Joshua recently returned to his country of birth Nigeria to engage in some social activities and relax after his defeat.
