Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka has delivered a damning verdict on the Buhari government. He has described it as a failure.
Soyinka told a group of students during his 85th birthday celebration that the Federal Government led by Muhammadu Buhari is not capable of solving problems of Nigerians.
The playwright was quoted by local media as saying that “The problems of this nation are beyond the solution that can be offered by this government, that’s the first admission; they have to stop thinking in partisan government.
There has always been a major problem with successive governments. It’s easier on the state level to say that a particular state is definitely doing better than another state. But the central government has failed, that’s my view in the main.”
Soyinka lamented the increase in violence caused by herdsmen, indiscriminate grazing of cattle and the destruction of farmlands.
He is recommending a National Conference to provide solutions for Nigeria’s problems.
Beyond partisan politics
Soyinka said the Buhari-led government must think beyond partisan politics to fix the country’s problems.
He however doesn’t believe the current government has what it takes to address Nigeria’s problems.
Soyinka said “There is a minimal level which any government which has been elected to power must achieve to be considered a true representative of the people.”
“They need to confront this nation as a habitation of human beings where very serious issues like economy, security, health, even threats of secession come up every day and convoke at the same time, a national conference, what I call an Indaba across all section which we will all meet and debate everything, including the economy of this nation.”
Soyinka seems to be believe that a national summit is the only way out for Nigeria.
President this year was re-elected for a second term and has promised to do more than his previous term.
