Simona Halep has stunned Serena Williams in Saturday’s Wimbledon ladies final to win her first Wimbledon title.

She virtually crushed Williams who was bidding to win a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title.

Halep beat Williams just in 56-minute winning 6-2 6-2 in front of an incredulous Centre Court.

The Romanian who is 27 years old has now won two Grand Slam titles after her 2018 French Open success.

“It was my best match,” the 27-year-old said during an interview session after her victory.

Simona Halep’s coach Daniel Dobre has said that Halep “played very well this year – in Miami, in Roland Garros and Eastbourne – and this week she found everything so she won.

“I started working with her more in 2013 and was with her in 2014 when she beat Serena, it is a long collaboration, but for sure these last four months have been the best.”

He also spoke about Halep’s mentality: “Most of that is down to her. She is very independent and knows what she wants. She has showed in the past that she can be very good on grass. On paper this match was the easiest because she just played so well.”

Williams reacts

37-year-old Williams has now suffered a third major final defeat in 12 months.

“She played out of her mind, it was a little bit deer in the headlights for me,” Williams said.

She later told the press that “Simona played great. It wasn’t a surprise for anyone to play great against me. I made a lot of errors.

“I have to figure out a way to win a final. Maybe playing other finals outside of Grand Slams would be helpful to get me in the groove.

“I dont feel there was too much tension. I was overhitting it and trying to go for too much because she was getting a tremendous amount of balls back.”

Williams lost in last year’s final to Germany’s Angelique Kerber.

At the time the same expectation of equalling the 24th Grand Slam weighed down on her.
