The Tunisian government has confirmed that the country’s President Beji Caid Essebsi has suffered a “severe health crisis”.
He has been hospitalized and confirmed to be alive after earlier rumors of his passing. 92-year old Essebsi is the world’s oldest sitting president.
According to the Prime Minister Youssef Chahed Mr. Essebsi is receiving the needed medical attention.
He warned against the spreading of what he called “fake news” about Essebsi’s condition.
Last week the President was hospitalized but the presidency described that as non-serious treatment.
Mr Essebsi has been prominent in the Tunisian political history after taking over as an elected president in 2014.
He came into office following the Arab uprisings across the region which forced former Tunisian President Zine el-Abedine Ben Ali out of office in 2011 after 23 years in office.
The 92-year old leader is due to step down and not take part in elections due in November.
Tunisia is making efforts at sustaining its democracy but in recent years there have been pockets of violence and activities of militants.
On Thursday one person was confirmed dead in the capital Tunis following a twin suicide bomb attack.
Dozens of people sustained injuries in the attack. In 2015, 21 people were killed during a hostage siege in the national museum, the Bardo in Tunis.
