Thousands of Malawians on Thursday staged a major protest as they express anger at the re-election of President Peter Mutharika.

Many Malawians especially opposition supporters dispute the results that confirmed President Mutharika’s election victory.

Mutharika last month was sworn in a second five-year term after winning the controversial presidential vote.

He was declared winner of the election with a 38.57% share of the vote.

But the opposition party leader Lazarus Chakwera who came second with 35.41% rejected the final results.

Mutharika however took his oath of office promising to tackle corruption.

Two opposition parties, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and the United Transformation Movement (UTM), are currently challenging the poll result in court .

They allege vote rigging and Judges are due to rule on the case on Friday.

But the protests across Malawi have not been that peaceful with Police and protesters clashing in three cities.

During one of the protests police used teargas to disperse demonstrators who tore down billboards of President Peter Mutharika.

At one of the gatherings, Lazarus Chakwera told the crowd that “Malawians are very angry with the manner in which the management of the election results were conducted and we want everyone involved in the injustice to resign and get out.”
