Chairman of Ghana’s largest opposition party the National Democratic Congress has been arrested.
Samuel Ofosu Ampofo who was arrested on Tuesday is being interrogated over the recent spate of kidnappings and arson attacks in Ghana.
He has reportedly turned down an invitation from the country’s Criminal Investigations Department of the police service after a suspect implicated him.
A warrant was issued for Mr Ampofo’s arrest after he turned down the Police invitation.
But his party has vowed to resist his arrest describing it as political harassment and intimidation.
The Police CID has also hinted that investigators will also search Mr. Ofosu Ampofo’s residence thoroughly as part of its investigations.
Leaked Tape
Mr Ofosu Ampofo is already standing trial with some party officials following the leakage of a tape.
He was purportedly heard inciting party supporters at a meeting to attack the Chairperson of the country’s Electoral Commission Chair and the Chairperson of the Peace Council.
Mr Ofosu Ampofo maintains the tape has been doctored.
The threats were allegedly issued in the wake of a political violence during a constituency election in Ghana’s capital city.
The Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence resulted in the shooting of some of the NDC supporters.
Former Ghanaian President John Mahama who is the flagbearer of Mr Ampofo’s party for the 2020 elections has also accused the government of harassing his party chairman.
Surge in kidnappings
Last week two Canadian women, were kidnapped in Ghana’s second biggest city Kumasi.
This year a 30-year-old Indian man was also kidnapped in Kumasi by men who demanded a $500,000 ransom.
The Consular-General and Head of Mission of Estonia to Ghana was also kidnapped in Accra during his regular morning walk in.
Police in Ghana for months now are still unable to locate three Ghanaian girls kidnapped in Western Ghana.
