Nineteen people are reported to have been killed in a village in Burkina Faso’s northern district of Arbinda.
Security officials say the attack was carried out by armed men on a market day.
Attacks like the one that took place in Arbinda are often executed by jihadists operating in the country.
In recent times deadly attacks have become rampant due to the presence of several Islamist militant groups in Burkina Faso.
Christians and Muslim clerics are often the main targets.
Last April unknown gunmen killed one pastor and five congregants in an attack on a Protestant church in northern Burkina Faso.
Just before this attack five teachers were also killed in the eastern part of the country. That attack was also blamed on jihadists.
Burkina Faso also suffers from deadly ethnic violence with many deaths recorded in recent times.
In January this year 46 people were also killed in an ethnic violence in a community called Yirgou.
Ethnic clashes are becoming deadly in the Sahel region. There have been similar clashes in neighboring Mali where fighting is fueled by the activities of Islamist militants.
