Doctors have warned that platform shoes, which are currently in vogue, are actually bad for the ankles, feet and overall posture.

According to New York-based Dr. Hillary Brenner, the problem has to do with the rigid soles of platform sandal, which, she warns, can throw off the wearer’s posture and gait, and could tweak the ankles or worse.

She suggests that shoes with flexible soles, such as tennis shoes, can allow people to shift their weight while they walk — unlike the platform shoes and sandals.

Brenner warned of other possible consequences: “You’re not in proper alignment, so, over time, that can add a lot of strain to your back,” The Sun quoted her as having said.

She disclosed that about “nine times out of 10,” women who wear the platform sandals visit her office complaining of sprained ankle.

An undergraduate athletic training director with the University of North Carolina in Charlotte, Tricia Hubbard, warned that if there is no treatment, about “30 to 40 percent of people with simple ankle sprains develop chronic long-term joint pathology.”

She counselled that anyone who has suffered ankle sprain on account of wearing platform shoes, needs between one and six weeks to recover if the injured ligaments must heal.

A podiatrist at Institute Beaute in New York City, Dr. Suzanne Levine, added that platform shoe wearers need to “exercise their inner core” if they want to “feel more stable in fabulous shoes.”

That way, you’ll develop the necessary fabulous core,” said Levine.
