Zimbabwe, one of the countries affected by the deadly Cyclone Idai is in dire need of millions of dollars to rebuild parts of the country.

The country is appealing for some $613 million in aid from local and foreign donors as it struggles to provide food for citizens following a severe drought.

The humanitarian crisis was also worsened by the recent cyclone that battered the country.

The United Nations says the El Nino-induced drought has destroyed many crops across Zimbabwe.

The global body said about a third of Zimbabwe’s population of 15 million people now need food assistance.

On Tuesday Zimbabwe launched an appeal with the ministry of information saying it requires $300 million in aid for food.

The government intends using the additional $313 to support emergency shelters, logistics and telecommunications among other needs due to the devastation caused by the cyclone.

Zimbabwe’s Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa has explained that the government is subsidizing the price of staple maize as part of the measures to support families and farmers as well.

Thousands are reported dead from the cyclone which affected Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi.

Several others are also stranded and without homes, requiring humanitarian aid to rebuild their lives.
