Over 60 people are reported dead in a road crash involving two passenger buses in Ghana’s Bono East region.
According to police officials the accident occurred after a head-on collision between the two buses on the Techiman – Kintampo road on Friday.
Although the exact number of deaths are yet to be confirmed, police say each bus had more than 50 passengers.
Police commander for the Kintampo community, Joseph Antwi Gyawu told local radio station Joy FM that the crash occurred at 2:00 am local time on Friday at a town called Ampoma.
One of the buses was reported to have burst into flames with fears of no survivors on board that vehicle.
Doctors in nearby health facilities have also spoken of treating many of those injured.
One health official, Kwame Arhin told a local radio station, Starr FM that “We’ve treated about 28 people”.
Police are now investigating the real cause of the accident which is a common phenomenon on that stretch of road.
Ghana’s road safety officials have on several occasions launched road safety campaign to ensure that drivers avoid being reckless on the road.
In many instances drivers are either tired while driving or just reckless ignoring road signs.
