Rwanda is rolling out a major campaign to explore the use of bamboo for industrial packaging and hygienic paper products.
The country’s environment ministry and water and forestry authority have partnered China bamboo aid project to make this a reality.
Rwanda currently grows five species of Bamboo. It now wants to add four additional species to augment the production.
The east African country has already completed feasibility study for the establishment of a factory for the processing of Bamboos.
It is currently seeking for investors to establish a small model factory to process bamboos from 500 hectares to 5,000 hectares.
Apart from the processing of Bamboo for industrial packaging, plans are in place to use the plant for other products such as tiles, furniture and salad as used in China.
Rwanda’s water and forestry authority says during the 2019/2020 fiscal year, bamboos will be planted on 300 hectares of land.
Rwanda is still struggling for enough suitable land to be used in the cultivation of the Bamboo species.
