Zimbabwe’s government has said that the deadly cyclone that hit Mozambique has battered parts of the country.
The impact of the cyclone has led to at least 24 deaths as well as destruction to some public amenities.
Zimbabwe’s information ministry said on Saturday that “Number of deaths is confirmed at 24 mainly from Chimanimani east. The number of missing people is currently 40 (and) the fatalities include 2 students.”
The government fears the death toll could increase with many reported to have been displaced due to destruction to their homes.
Zimbabwe officials say they expect more rains in the coming days and potential destruction.
Mozambique and Malawi have already suffered significantly from the impact of this powerful tropical storm.
In some towns in Mozambique billboards were seen blown off and electricity and telephone poles also knocked down.
The cyclone Idai was already expected to make a landfall in Mozambique after days of heavy rains led to deadly flooding.
Malawi has also been put on high alert and is expecting the worst of the cyclone in its major cities.
Already over 100 people have been killed by floods in Mozambique and neighboring Malawi due to heavy rains.
